Umbraco websites built with theming in mind

Three knowledge-intensive organisations get new Umbraco websites built with a focus on theming and tagged content.

Three new websites

Idrættens Analyseinstitut (idan.dk), Videncenter for Folkeoplysning (vifo.dk) and Play the Game (playthegame.org) form a joint institute, which is tasked with creating an overview and insight into sports and popular education nationally and internationally.

A desire to update an almost 10-year-old solution to the latest version of Umbraco CMS was the primary reason why we initiated a major project with the institute to create three new websites. At the same time, finding new and more intuitive ways to organise and share content across domains was an important goal.

Right from the start, there has been a really good and informal tone in the collaboration with Illumi, which has made it much easier to talk through our relatively complex project and create a common understanding of where we wanted to go, what was possible and how we could solve the various challenges.

Information architecture

Identifying all types of content and creating a logical structure that makes sense for the different audiences of the three websites required extensive prior analysis.

All three domains are managed from the same Umbraco Backoffice and share a number of content modules and functionalities, making it easy to share articles and publications across the three websites.

The Play the Game site is in English and has an international target audience. Therefore, we have made it possible for content from Play the Game to be shared in lists on idan.dk and vifo.dk but not vice versa for language reasons.

Massive migration task

We have migrated more than 3000 news articles and 2000 research publications from the old Umbraco solution. In the process, we mapped master data such as publication date, author, summary, etc. During the migration, each article was automatically created as a new content page in Umbraco with the corresponding master data.

Tagging of content

It's important that users can easily find relevant content, whether you're a political organisation or a voluntary association. Therefore, we have made it possible for editors in Umbraco Backoffice to create different tags that can be attached to a given content article. A content article can have multiple tags or just one. The tagging function combined with an advanced search function has made it easy for editors to create content lists that are relevant and current in a given context on the 3 websites.

In Umbraco Backoffice, editors can create new filter categories and values themselves.

Currently, the solution contains these overall filter categories:

  • Publication type

  • Publication category

  • Author

  • Article keywords

  • Article category

With three different websites that can both stand on their own and have content that cuts across the different pages, our project has not been easy. But Illumi have been fantastic sparring partners in finding good and constructive solutions in both coding and design that meet the challenges. We are very pleased with the final result, which is much more modern and updated, but at the same time recognisable.

Author archive

We have made it possible to create any number of authors in Umbraco Backoffice. On a given knowledge article or publication, the editor can assign the author who wrote the article. Each author has a separate page where, in addition to an author biography, you can see other publications from that author. The list is automatically updated when a new article tagged with that author is published.

Web Accessibility

Idrættens Analyseinstitut, Videncenter for Folkeoplysning and Play the Game are subject to web accessibility guidelines. Therefore, in the development work, we have focused on ensuring the necessary technical support for users with various disabilities.

The solution naturally complies with the WCAG 2.1 guidelines.

We have had an excellent collaboration with the project manager, who has had a proper understanding of our organisation and has always been easy to talk things through with. The team members have all had a very good insight into our project and have always known where we were in the process, which has given us great peace of mind. We felt we were in good hands at all stages of the project.
