The Danish Dairy Board
14 websites in one Umbraco solution
A burning platform was replaced by a corporate Umbraco solution with nine websites and room to grow. Since then, five more have been added.
The Danish Dairy Board is a knowledge and industry organisation for Danish dairies that works to create optimal development opportunities in the dairy industry both nationally and internationally through advice and service to its members.
A burning platform
When we started the dialogue with the Danish Dairy Board in early 2020 about establishing 9 new websites in a single Umbraco solution, they had what they described as a burning web platform. They experienced a number of challenges with the existing solution, which in many ways were critical in terms of supporting the organisation's mission.
The Danish Dairy Board had the majority of their websites on a legacy Sitecore solution, the coding state of which made it difficult to support and even harder to develop further.
We could see that many of the wishes we had for our future web solutions would generally be extremely expensive to develop because our solution was "fragile" and no longer suitable for further development.
Jane Ernst Nielsen, Digital Marketing Officer at the Danish Dairy Board
Greater independence
A big wish for the Danish Dairy Board was to become much more self-reliant when it came to maintaining their many websites. In the old CMS, they found the user interface complicated to navigate and they were locked into outdated page templates that no longer supported the way they wanted to work with content.
Another realisation was that they were only using a fraction of the many options Sitecore offers, simply because it was too complex and almost impossible to set up without calling in a trained Sitecore developer every time. Therefore, the cost of Sitecore licences and minor development tasks on the solution was also completely disproportionate to the real needs of the Danish Dairy Board.
Fewer bottlenecks
To avoid bottlenecks, the Danish Dairy Board also wanted to enable many more employees to act as content editors, which supported the move to a more user-friendly and intuitive CMS.
Good experiences with Umbraco CMS
The Danish Dairy Board already has a couple of well-functioning sites on the Umbraco platform, so it was natural to consider a future with a corporate Umbraco solution.
The solution
Initially, the Danish Dairy Board had nine websites that needed to be brought together in one common Umbraco solution.
Our solution is based on a website template that the Dairy Board can use to create any number of new websites that are managed in a single Umbraco back office.
All websites use the same basic package of features and functions and can relatively easily be assigned a new design theme that makes the websites visually different from each other.
We hadn't seen the template solution as an option ourselves, but it fits our organisation and needs really well, and we're glad Illumi brought it to the table.
Anja Rasmussen, Digital Communications Officer at the Danish Dairy Board
This model is particularly interesting for larger companies or organisations with many business areas where there is a need to communicate to different target groups.
Delighted with the new solution
The new solution is much more intuitive to work with. For the Dairy Board, it has meant that more people can take responsibility for producing and maintaining the content for the many websites.
Many more people now have the courage to take on the role of editor, and even those who have little experience with CMS have given positive feedback on the solution.
Unlike the previous Sitecore solution, with Umbraco there are no ongoing licence costs.
It has been an economically advantageous solution because every new website we build is largely based on reuse.
